Course Description:

This course will survey the history of Rome from its founding to its fall.  It will combine class meetings with travel to Rome, where course instruction will continue on site.  It will focus particularly on the Roman Republic, the Empire, and the Rise of Christian Rome.  Exploration

of these significant historical eras will be amplified

by visits to historical sites including the Forum, Palatine Hill, Coliseum, Domus Aurea, Castel Sant’Angelo and the Christian catacombs. Museum visits will include the Vatican Palace, and Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, home to Rome’s finest archaeological collection of Etruscan artifacts. Side trips will include visits to Rome’s ancient seaport at Ostia Antica, Hadrian’s Villa and the palace at Tivoli.

Pertinent Information

"For the present I know not where

to start, overwhelmed as I am by

the wonder of so many things and

by the greatness of my astonish-

ment. . .In truth Rome was greater,

and greater are its ruins, than I

imagined. I no longer wonder that

the whole world was conquered by

this city but that I was conquered

so late."
